Apparently by adding this: header('P3P: CP="CAO PSA OUR"'); to the page involved in setting the sessions will make IE work correctly.

Wow, such an obvious fix. As an engineer that has sympathy for the systems released by monolithic beasts like Microsoft, I just can't comprehend the logic that went into that "solution"!

On slow connections insisting on a full preview is going to make things slow for low-end users to scroll through a long list looking for a layout they already have a good idea of what it looks like.

Also, the layout hierarchy may be useful in assisting users as to which layouts are for what purpose ... loosing the tree may be a step backwards.

If the full preview is too slow, the layout itself is too slow. The full preview is the only reliable way to show what the space will look like with the layout applied. The quick preview is so vague as to be utterly useless.

The tree view is much too complex and shows layouts the user may not be able to use. A drop-down will be simpler and also filtered to only show layouts the current user can select.

The layout screen needs a heavy de-crufting session, stripping it down to the essentials.

I think that we should move this discussion out into the public arena ... let our users decide which features they like and which they dont.

I would be up for having two views, keep the existing screen as an 'advanced' view and this one as a 'simple' view.

NB: IIRC the existing screen filters the displayed layouts based on permission.

I find the quick preview annoying at times, but it's not a huge deal. re: the tree issue, imho at the point where you are keeping 'inherit css from parents' (which seems like a good idea) you need to have a tree view.

you can emulate that in a drop down with some logic.

        the base theme
        --------------
        - my theme
        -- dark
        -- light
        -- pastel
        --- easter
        --- zomg
        --------------
        - other theme
        -- test

        or something like that...

          Yes, that could work.

Now thats cute ... best of both worlds (big grin)

I dont seem to be able to actually select a layout though, also I'm unsure about having the preview area inside the dropdown.

Only Adaptavist staff will be able to access that area.

I assume that mock-up is for the Default Layouts screen (in Theme Admin) and not the Layout Chooser screen (in Space Admin)?

Changes are afoot to make this happen ... hopefully in time for 3.4 (wink)
