The Migration Process
Learn what to expect and how to prepare when migrating Community Forums for Confluence Cloud.
Migrating to Confluence Cloud from an existing DC instance is a big undertaking. Atlassian has developed a migration assistant to help you through the process. You can learn more about it from their documentation.
The general process is as follows:
How does Community Forums fit?
Your forums are migrated along with all of your content by the migration assistant. There is no need to take any extra actions. However, Confluence Cloud works very differently to Confluence DC. This means that not all the features you may be used to in DC can be replicated in Cloud (see the feature parity table for more detail). We know that maintaining all of your data is the most important thing. So we have ensured that all your content will migrate to your new site.
Forum Macros
Forum macros are supported, so they migrate over with all the data they contained in your DC instance. All of the topics and the forum macro migrate to the new Cloud instance. You can use your migrated forum macros to create new topics and continue to use them as you did before. However, you cannot edit these macros once you migrate them to the new instance.
For new forums you need to use the Cloud Forum macro.
Forum Column Macros
Nesting is not supported in Confluence Cloud, so the new Community Forums Cloud does not use Forum Column macros. Your migrated forums will display the columns used by Community Forums Cloud, regardless of the columns you had set up in DC. The columns shown are:
- Sticky
- Topic Name
- Author
- # Replies
- Last Activity
New forums created in Confluence Cloud do not need nested Column macros.
Forum Summary Macros and Topic Summary Macros
These macros are not supported in Confluence Cloud. They are migrated as 'hidden' macros. This means you can find them on the edit page but they are not visible on the view page. Their content can still be accessed from the storage format of the page.
