The following is a use case for staging changes to a production instance using Project Configurator for Jira Cloud.

Staging for Production

Using a staging instance is best practice in ensuring that changes to a production environment are successful. The steps below illustrate how Project Configurator for Jira Cloud can be used for this process.

For more information on staging server environments, check out this Atlassian article.

This case will assume the authorization and connection of three Jira Cloud instances: Testing, Staging, and Production.

Use our Connections page to learn more about connecting and authorizing Jira Cloud instances.

Testing to Staging

Optional: Using the Migration feature, copy any desired files to a backup Jira Cloud instance.

  1. Make changes to desired project in your Testing instance. In this case, we'll call the project Blog.
  2. Using the Migration feature, click Add Configuration for Step 1. Select the Testing instance.
  3. Click Add Configuration for Step 2. Select the Staging instance.
  4. Click Add Configuration for Step 3. Select desired projects, in this case: Blog.
  5. Click Ok.
  6. A simulated transfer is now available. Click the Run icon, to execute a simulation.
    1. During the simulation, feedback messages are presented in the Activity Log. These can be later interrogated in the Reporting screen.
    2. If the simulation returns a warning message, changes can be made in the configurations from the previous steps and the simulation can be run again.
    3. On completion of a successful simulation, a green Redo option appears. You may carry out additional simulations or proceed to running the actual migration.

  7. Click the Run icon, for Step 5, to execute the transfer of the project Blog from Testing to Staging.
  8. Ensure that the changes made to the Staging instance from the Testing instance are as expected. Review information about the real and simulated execution in Reporting.
