Creating Custom Issue Hierarchies

Hierarchy for Jira lets you create parent-child relationships between any issues. You can create higher-level issues above epics, make tasks the children of stories, and much more.

Follow these steps to create a custom issue hierarchy.

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Issues.

  2. Select Issue linking from the left menu.

  3. Scroll down to Add New Link Type and create a new link type with the following fields:
    1. Name: Agile Docs Parent
    2. Outward Link Description: parent of
    3. Inward Link Description: child of

The Outward Link Description must be parent of and Inward Link Description must be child of or else the hierarchy will not be recognized.

Also, if you have an existing parent-child link in your project, you can simply edit the link name and continue to use it.

  4. After completing the fields, Add your new link type.

  5. Open an issue you want to make a parent or child of another issue, select Link Issue and add the parent of or child of link, depending on the relationship you want.

  6. Open Hierarchy for Jira Cloud to view your new issue hierarchy.
